Fashion School
Was fashion school worth the investment?
When I graduated from high school, I was uncertain about which career path to pursue. I chose to attend a fashion school in Vancouver, where I could complete my diploma in a year and I felt optimistic and eager to explore opportunities within the fashion industry. Creating outfits sparked my interest in fashion and became an integral part of my life.
Prior to applying, I had heard positive reviews from individuals who had previously attended fashion school. Before I submitted my application, I had set high expectations in my head that I would secure a job immediately after graduation.
Unfortunately, there were a couple of issues that I faced during my time at fashion school. One of the setbacks was the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the lack of substantial fashion industry opportunities in Vancouver. This proved to be a major setback as our schooling was conducted partially online and partially in person, with our class divided into two groups. The absence of in-person connection deprived us of valuable networking opportunities within the industry.
To be transparent, the director had assured us that we would secure opportunities in the industry, yet failed to provide the necessary contacts to facilitate our career advancements.
In my opinion, attending fashion school in other countries or cities might be a better option than Vancouver.
Despite these challenges, there were some positives to highlight, such as meeting new people and gaining experience as a stylist for several editorial shoots. Through this program, I discovered my passion for marketing and social media.
